Drug Development, Biomolecules and Biotechnology

This session will host discussions around biological molecules that are under-represented in modern molecular biology compared to nucleic acids and proteins. An understanding of metabolism is pivotal to comprehending the phenotypic behavior of all living organisms (including humans) where metabolism is integral to health and proper functioning. Natural and synthetic compounds affect vast number of biological processes. Metabolites (primary and secondary) represent the intermediate products of metabolic reactions catalyzed by various enzymes that naturally occur within cells. We don’t want to be limited to «small molecules» here as lipids, and other biopolymers come to play in biomedicine at the unprecedented pace. The aim for us is to try and bring together the fundamental discoveries in biology, and those potentially leading to therapeutic know-how with the help of emerging technologies that recently allowed studying these molecules.
